In a recent debate moderated by Arizona journalist Brahm Resnik, U.S. Senate candidates Richard Carmona and Jeff Flake began peppering each other with repetitive and excited accusations, a la Romney-Obama-Debate-Two-Moderated-By-Candy-Crowley. Former U.S. Surgeon General Carmona, a Democrat, blamed Rep. Jeff Flake, a Republican, for not explaining his vote on a recent bill. Flake retorted Carmona didn’t know anything about how Washington worked.
At that point, Resnik tried to silence the squabble and move to another question. But the two kept at it, so Resnik, who is a dad and understands how to settle kids down, reigned in the boys once again, joking he now understood how Candy Crowley felt.
“You’re prettier” [than Candy Crowley] Carmona told Resnik.
You can see Resnik saying, “Not sure how to take that.”
Voters, especially women, might not be sure how to take that, either.
The exchange was picked up by Buzzfeed and The Atlantic Wire.
The Atlantic points out that Carmona’s treatment of women has been called into question, so the comment is all the more relevant.
Carmona then later apologized for the “joke,” according to The Arizona Republic.
A joke?
Really?
