How about feckless Attorney General Tom Horne, who did nothing as State Superintendent of Schools and continues that work at the AG office?
Or “I’m not a Birther but I kiss up to them” Ken Bennett?
Both are rumored to want the job.
How about a Democrat? Any Democrat? Name one Democrat you can think of to run in 2014?
Yep, the silence is deafening.
So at this way-too-early state, does that mean we’ll have the choice between feckless and weird, between Horne and Bennett?
Geesh, let’s hope not.
Maybe we’ll be lucky enough to have the oxymoronic reasonable Republican run for office.
There is one, after all. In Mesa, of all places.
Its mayor, Scott Smith.
Conservative, Mormon, from an old Arizona family, fiscally conservative.
A guy with a vision to bring the near-dead Mesa back to life. He’s helped to bring in three universities to that city in the last couple of months. He continues to search for health-related industries to locate in Mesa. And he spearheaded the extension of light rail into the heart of the downtown, a downtown that can only benefit from people riding it there.
One thing Scott Smith isn’t, however, is uber social conservative; that is, he checks all the social conservative boxes but his focus is on economic health and not on the various pet issues of Arizona’s social conservative elite.
There’ve been faint rumblings over here in the East Valley that he might be interested in running. His work for Mesa certainly qualifies him for that job.
And given his possible competition, we can only hope he’ll run.
